Elin Bernhardson:

My journey within Sandvik has been great and I have learned a lot, both within my profession but a lot about me as a person.

You have recently moved from Sweden to the US on an international assignment, tell us about that!

This assignment is a three-year contract, which means I will stay here in Scranton, US for three years to work for Sandvik. After three years I will move back to Sweden and continue to work for Sandvik.

What are the challenges and main benefits of living and working in another country?

The challenges are that you are far away from all your friends and family. It is very important for me to keep in touch with everyone at home. Benefits on the personal level are of course to be able to explore a new country, to meet new friends and interact with other cultures.

Working abroad is very interesting and you learn a lot about both the new culture, but also a lot about yourself. I think the benefits surpass the challenges by far. However you need to be very open-minded when working in a new culture. The ways of doing things back in Sweden might not be the only solution to a problem. Nevertheless I would encourage everyone who wants to work abroad to actually take the step to do it.

Tell us about your previous employments at Sandvik!

I started working for Sandvik in 2006 at the marketing department within Sandvik Tooling. After about a year I moved to Sandvik Mining and Construction (SMC) as a Communications Officer. At SMC I learned a lot about internal communication. I stayed at SMC for about three years until I received the opportunity to move to the US. My journey within Sandvik has been great and I have learned a lot, both within my profession and about me as a person.
